Japanese pack prices went up in 2026

Standard 5-card packs in sets released from May 2026 cost ¥200, up from ¥180. The increase was set on January 30, 2026, partly because of higher material costs. Packs already on sale kept their old price, and a few packs are priced differently. Abyss Eye, out May 22, 2026, was the first main set at the new price.

Box prices rose with it. Pokémon Center Online lists Abyss Eye and Storm Emeralda boxes at ¥6,000, against ¥5,400 for Ninja Spinner and Inferno X.

In the US, the English pack MSRP rose from US$3.99 to US$4.49 with the launch of the Scarlet & Violet Series. A 36-pack booster box lists at US$161.64 at Pokémon Center US, and at CA$218.99 at Pokémon Center Canada.

Rarity marks in Japanese and English

Japanese cards print a letter code for their rarity, such as RR, AR, SR, SAR, MUR and MA. Japanese set pages name some of them: AR (アートレア), SAR (スペシャルアートレア), SR (スーパーレア) and MA (メガアタックレア).

English cards print a symbol instead, and each English card list names its rarities: double rare, ultra rare, illustration rare, special illustration rare and Mega hyper rare in Pitch Black, plus Mega attack rare in Ascended Heroes. To compare one card in both languages, look it up on Quaza Track.

Japanese and English sets are separate releases

Japanese and English sets come out separately, each with its own name, card count and numbering. Each set guide lists its own cards, for example Japan's Storm Emeralda and the English Delta Reign.

Japanese sets usually come out first. 30th Celebration came out on the same day around the world, September 16, 2026. Every date is on Pokémon TCG release dates.

Can you play Japanese cards in tournaments in Canada?

Not if you are a player from Canada at a Championship Series event. The Play! Pokémon tournament handbook sets the legal languages by region: English in the United States and Canada, plus French in Canada. It also treats Japanese cards as marked, because their backs are different. At League sessions and casual events, the organiser decides.

Which should you buy?

To play at events in Canada, buy English. To open new cards as soon as they exist, buy Japanese: Japanese sets usually come out first. For more cards per pack, buy English: 10 cards against 5. Every English pack also carries a Pokémon TCG Live code card.
